Athletic Training

What Is An Athletic Trainer?

An athletic trainer is a highly qualified, multi-skilled professional who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergencies, and acute or chronic medical conditions and injuries. He/she works under the direction and supervision of a physician. Athletic trainers are nationally certified and must have a license through State of New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. They are supported academically and clinically by the American Medical Association, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and many other organizations.

What Can Athletic Trainers Do?

Athletic Trainers are competent in the evaluation, assessment, and treatment of athletes and their injuries. They can create and implement rehabilitation programs as well as use supportive taping, bracing, and bandaging for the prevention and management of injuries. They may utilize several different treatment modalities including, but not limited to, cold, heat, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and manual therapy as part of the rehabilitation process.

They are also trained in emergency care, including CPR and AED administration, wound care and bleeding control, splinting and immobilization, oxygen administration, treatment for anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia, seizures, as well as heat and cold emergencies.

Athletic trainers are also up-to-date with the NJ state law mandated concussion prevention, recognition, and return-to-play policies.
